Community Impact Against Poverty in Myanmar

We collaborate and work in partnership with local disadvantaged communities in Myanmar. We aim to create a model operation that will share knowledge and technology with other local businesses and the community at large to deliver positive impacts in local communities. Our activities emphasize appreciation for local culture and traditions by educating locals and visitors in how traditional practices can be integrated into the larger, globalized economy sustainably. Our projects are planned to be self-sufficient and sustainable in the long term.

We chose the village of New Bagan, Nyaung U administrative district, as the location for our first office and training center in Myanmar. This community was forcibly relocated to this site from Old Bagan in 1989, following the failed democratic uprising of the previous year. Earlier a fishing village, many households have experienced serious negative impacts as a result of the relocation, including loss of land, property, and livelihood. As a result, the community suffers from severe poverty, lacking adequate shelter, sanitation, and education opportunities.

The economic and political situation in Myanmar creates a challenging environment for startup entrepreneurs, especially independent, ethical, and social enterprises. Our project team and developing advisory board have professional training and experience in ICT for development, organic agriculture, sustainability, environmental management and community-based tourism, as well as experience in small business operations. Positive environmental impacts in our host communities will be supported through technology adoption, microfinance, training in organic agriculture, renewable energy and natural building.

Our Focus is Education, Environment, and Sustainable Livelihoods

Our development model focuses on education, environment, and livelihoods
Our development model focuses on education, environment, and livelihoods

We use small, targeted interventions and pilot projects to develop local capacity to improve their livelihoods and support themselves. Through collaborative partnerships with local communities, we identify available resources and participants for skills training to deliver quality products and services. Some ideas target foreign visitors to Myanmar while others focus on local markets. Using donations to get started, our projects are planned for long-term sustainability and financial self-sufficiency. We seek out undervalued resources, both labor and materials, to address social challenges through innovative, small-scale social entrepreneurship.
